Mid-Wilts Way Stage 4 - Smallgrain Plantation to Martinslade

Leaving Smallgrain Plantation, you'll head in a south/south-westerly direction towards Devizes.  You then re-join the Kennet & Avon Canal and will see the magnificent Caen Hill Locks - one of the longest flight of locks in the country - before arriving at Martinslade and the end of this itinerary.

Day 6 Mid-Wilts Way Itinerary - Detailed Information

Morning

Arrive at the start point by 10am.

Walk the Mid-Wilts Way from Smallgrain Plantation to the Bishops Cannings turn off (see Bishops Cannings Detour map).

0.9 mile / 1.5 kms

Take a detour to Bishops Cannings to have lunch at The Crown Inn and to visit the beautiful, grade-1 listed Church of St Mary the Virgin.

Afternoon

Re-trace your steps to follow the detour back to the Mid-Wilts Way from Bishops Cannings.

Walk the Mid-Wilts Way from the Bishops Cannings turn off to Devizes.

Approximately 1 hour

4.7 miles / 7.6 kms

Take a detour and explore Devizes.

The Wiltshire Museum is in the heart of the town and has interesting displays and exhibitions throughout the year.

Allow 1.5 - 2 hours

Walk the Mid-Wilts Way from Devizes to Martinslade.

You will pass the impressive sight of Caen Hill Locks, a scheduled ancient monument. Caen Hill is one of the longest continuous flight of locks in the country - a total of 29 locks with a rise of 237 feet over 2 miles with a 1 in 44 gradient.
