Michael Portillo was a Conservative Member of Parliament for most of the period 1984-2005 and was a minister for eleven years under Margaret Thatcher and John Major.

He has been making documentaries for radio and television since 1998, including sixteen consecutive years of filming Rail Journeys on five continents for BBC 2. Also, for sixteen years, he was a regular on This Week, a satirical look back on the week in politics on BBC1. He presents a Sunday morning magazine programmes on politics and the arts for GB News.
