Tempest is a new exhibition of paintings by Wiltshire artist Jennie Slater. Known for her dynamic depictions of wild seascapes, Slater builds layers of rich texture and movement to capture the untamed spirit of the sea. This exhibition promises an immersive encounter with its raw power and shifting moods.
MADE is delighted to present the work of Jennie Slater who joined the MADE Collective in September 2025.
Jennie Slater is a seascape painter inspired by memories of time spent by the sea. Working directly in the landscape, she takes photographs, paints, and draws outdoors, drawing on personal experience and close observation. Her work seeks to capture the emotional resonance of coastal places—the movement, power, and unpredictability of the ocean.
Inspired particularly by rough seas and wild weather, Slater explores the ever-changing moods of the sea, from turbulent waters to rolling surf. Rather than focusing on literal representation, she aims to convey a visceral sense of being there: the sound of crashing waves, the pull of the tide, and the shifting atmosphere. Through expressive paint and mark-making, Jennie evokes the physical presence of the sea, inviting viewers to reconnect with their own memories and experiences of the coast.
ABOUT JENNIE
Always interested in painting, Jennie decided to go back to college to study. In 2004 as a mature student she gained a BA (hons) Drawing for Fine Art Practice.
Since then her painting has developed, in particular, she has been drawn to the sea . This has taken her to many places drawing and sketching in nature, capturing a moment. These are recordings of colour, sound and all weathers by the sea.
Using this information as a starting point, back in the studio a painting begins, allowing the materials- usually oil or acrylic paint, to take over the process, making marks in a very free and natural way … a memory of a moment..
The sea the sea, the open sea…
The blue, the fresh, forever free…
