John and Rosa are the owners of probably one of the prettiest village pubs in the Vale of Pewsey, The Royal Oak in Wootton Rivers. This charming thatched pub dates from the 16th century and offers a bar and restaurant, as well as a games room for pool and darts.
Ideally located close to the Kennet & Avon Canal, in a chocolate box village, it is a perfect stopping off point for walkers and cyclists, for coffee, lunch or dinner. The Royal Oak is surrounded by fantastic walking along the Canal, on the downs or in Savernake Forest and is just a few miles from local landmarks such as Crofton Beam Engines and Wilton Windmill. There is easy access to Marlborough and Pewsey, but you are tucked away in a peaceful location that just oozes quintessential England.
Originally The Royal Oak was a coaching inn, but over the centuries, it has also been used as a farrier’s yard and the village bakery. The interior of the building reflects its heritage with low, oak-beamed ceilings and wide, open log fires during the winter months.
Whether you want a bar snack or prefer to dine in the restaurant, the menus are extensive and seasonal (including a daily specials board), with most produce being sourced locally. Vegetarian options and children’s meals are always available. As The Royal Oak is a freehouse, there is an extensive wine list and local beers are also served, with a guest beer on tap.
Well-behaved dogs on leads are very welcome.
Free Wi-Fi is available.
The Royal Oak is licensed as a venue for civil weddings and can accommodate up to 60 in the restaurant or up to 200 guests with a marquee.
