Situated in Marlborough’s wide and busy High Street, this charmingly restored 17th century historic house, dating from the Great Fire of Marlborough in 1653, is well worth a visit.  As well as the restored house itself, The Merchant’s House also has a beautiful 17th century garden and a quality gift shop.

The knowledgeable guides will transport you back to the 17th century and the life of the prosperous silk merchant, Thomas Bayly, who originally lived here.  Boasting a magnificent great oak staircase, the house also includes a great fireplace, with original wall paintings, as well as the paneled room.  This is the most original room in the house with the floor, wall paneling, fireplace and over mantel all dating from this period.  The dining room has the original unique striped paint theme.  The kitchen bedchamber, being the warmest room of the house, was of course the most desirable.

There is also an abundance of 17th century furniture and artefacts for you to view.

The Merchant’s House welcomes Groups and Coach Parties throughout the year – please phone the Office on 01672 511491 to discuss visit dates and times and they will organise guides to take you on a tour of The Merchant’s House and garden.

The Merchant’s House is next door to the Marlborough Museum, full of local history and interesting artefacts.
