A Day in Hungerford

The market town of Hungerford is just over the Wiltshire border in West Berkshire.  This pretty town is best known for antiques shops and fairs and lots of independent shops, but has lots more to offer with a number of cafes and pubs in its High Street.

The Kennet & Avon Canal runs through the centre of the town and on Wednesdays it's market day right in the centre of the town by the Town Hall.

Hungerford also has a mainline railway station.

The Wiltshire Connect on-demand bus service connects the Vale of Pewsey to Hungerford and Hungerford Station (which is right in the centre of the town).  Book a bus to collect you from your nearest pick up/drop off point at a time that you would like to travel (obviously subject to availability) and then book your bus back for later in the day.  Find out more about the bus service here.

We have suggestions on what to do below, but for more information, such as The Hungerford Heritage Trail, please visit their website.

The High Street of Hungerford is full of independent shops, including many antique showrooms, the award-winning Hungerford Arcade Antiques Centre, the Hungerford Bookshop and the weekly Market on Wednesdays (from 8am to 1pm).

Enjoy a stroll through the town and enjoy exploring these popular and friendly shops, where the experts are on hand to help and advise you.

Find some time to visit St Lawrence Church.  Located in The Croft, this beautiful Church, with an impressive tower, is tucked away from the centre of the town.  Built between 1814 and 1816, it is Grade II* listed, with some impressive stained glass windows.  On Thursdays between 10am and 12 noon, you can drop in for a cup of coffee or tea and a slice of cake!
